Personal Public works within audience perception of highly visible gender nonconforming bodies while also seeking to expand that same perception through public performance. In that same vein, the piece only centers gender nonconforming bodies insofar as the audience chooses to center gender identity on stage. With an awareness of this dichotomy, the piece plays with subtle and not-so-subtle body language, garment colors, and gestures inviting both proximity and distance with audience members. Personal Public invites real-time relational moments with each other as the piece unfolds and ultimately encourages the viewer to see the performers as relate-able humans. The piece was curated by Liza Coviello in an exhibition posturing performance art that creates social change, whether knowingly or not, by challenging the status quo and the norms of acceptable representation.
